The FDA approved Ryzumvi, phentolamine ophthalmic solution 0.75%, for presbyopia in adults. The decision expands a product previously authorised to reverse pharmacologically induced pupil dilation into age-related difficulty focusing on nearby objects.
Opus Genetics said the approval triggers a milestone payment under its arrangement with Viatris. The pivotal VEGA-2 and VEGA-3 studies met their primary and key secondary efficacy endpoints, according to the company. Viatris holds exclusive US commercialisation rights and said it is exploring a partner for the new indication.
That leaves a practical commercial question after the regulatory success: how the treatment will be introduced and supported in the market. Approval establishes permission to sell for the new use, but it does not specify the eventual partnership structure or guarantee adoption.
Tolerability will also matter for a discretionary vision treatment. The companies reported conjunctival redness and instillation-site irritation among common adverse reactions. For Opus, the milestone provides a direct contractual benefit; the longer-term opportunity depends on successful commercial execution by its partner.
