Sanofi will pay Regeneron $1 billion upfront to expand their antibody collaboration, with up to $7 billion more tied to future milestones. Announced on 1 October, the agreement covers four long-acting immunology candidates and divides development costs, commercialisation costs and future profits equally.
The most advanced asset, REGN20423, targets IL-13 and is in Phase I. Three additional antibodies are expected to enter clinical studies in 2027. Regeneron will lead research and development, while Sanofi will direct global commercialisation. The partners also settled their collaboration-related litigation.
The commercial logic is straightforward: established infrastructure can support another generation of medicines addressing related biology. Longer dosing intervals could offer differentiation if clinical studies establish durable disease control.
However, the size of the payment should not obscure the development stage. Most of the portfolio remains preclinical, and the milestone ceiling is conditional. This is a substantial commitment to future optionality, with years of clinical execution still separating the deal from potential product revenue.
