Roche disclosed that it has ended development of RG6540, a CD19/CD20-directed allogeneic CAR-T therapy acquired through Poseida. The decision was part of a wider early-stage pipeline clear-out accompanying its third-quarter update.
Chief executive Thomas Schinecker maintained that Roche's assessment of the acquisition had not changed. He said the company continues to work on CD19/CD20 therapies and has newer molecules emerging from the acquired platform.
The update illustrates the distinction between buying an individual candidate and buying a technology platform. A discontinued programme removes one potential route to value, but it does not establish that the entire acquisition has failed.
Equally, management confidence cannot substitute for clinical evidence from successor programmes. Investors will need to see how the remaining candidates perform and whether the platform produces medicines with a competitive profile. The immediate consequence is a narrower disclosed pipeline, alongside a continuing corporate commitment to the underlying cell-therapy approach and its future development opportunities.
