Otsuka Holdings (TSE: 4578) Moves Taiho's Oral Azacitidine Combination Towards Filing

Taiho, part of Otsuka Holdings, has reported a positive Phase III result for its oral combination of azacitidine and cedazuridine. The AZTOUND study concerns myelodysplastic syndromes and chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia, conditions that can progress to acute myeloid leukaemia.
The combination met its primary endpoint by matching exposure to subcutaneously administered azacitidine. Taiho said the safety profile was consistent with the injectable treatment and plans to submit a US marketing application.
Cedazuridine protects its chemotherapy partner from enzymatic breakdown, enabling oral delivery. The approach builds on Taiho's existing experience combining cedazuridine with decitabine.
The potential benefit is principally a change in treatment delivery. Reducing repeated clinic visits could be meaningful for patients and carers, provided the formulation gains approval and can be used reliably. Matching drug exposure is not a claim of superior survival. The investment case rests on translating a familiar treatment into a practical oral regimen with an acceptable regulatory and reimbursement pathway.
