Bristol Myers Squibb's Phase III Aloft programme has drawn scrutiny following reporting of liver injury events, including a patient death involving multi-organ failure and acute hepatic injury. The information emerged via a European protocol amendment and company responses.
The treatment assignment of the patient who died remained unknown to the company because the trial had not been unblinded. The event therefore cannot currently be attributed to admilparant rather than placebo. BMS said an independent monitoring committee had recommended continuing the programme.
Topline results in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis are expected by the end of 2026, with progressive pulmonary fibrosis results expected early next year.
The disclosure adds an important question to the eventual readout: how adverse events distribute across treatment groups and clinical backgrounds. Analyst reassurance about the drug's mechanism is an interpretation, not a resolution of causality. Equally, an event reported during a trial is not proof that the investigational treatment caused it. The complete safety dataset will matter alongside efficacy.
